Our Simple Rhyme

(for Jane, since 1966)

I am Mary,
you are Jane,
two old gals
not the same:

You’re petite.
I am tall.
I am big.
You are small.

You keep people.
I keep dogs.
You wear sneakers.
I wear clogs.

I eat sugar.
You do not.
You feel chilly.
I feel hot.

You go flying.
I stay home.
You run meetings.
I’m alone.

I like words.
You like numbers.
You use fingers.
I’m all thumber.

I gulp coffee.
You sip tea.
I have mountains.
You, the sea.

My home and
my heart are small;
yours, both larger,
all in all.

I am here,
you are there,
and both of us
are everywhere.
Having what
the other lacks
we are filling
all the cracks
fate keeps making
trouble of.
Modus operandi:
love.
