May There Be No Sadness Here

        (remembering Lois Alger)

May there be no sadness here.
An empty cup, an empty space,
an empty sky make room for fear
unless remembrance take its place.

There are no words for what remains
at sunset when a storm has cleared
leaving drops on the windowpanes,
but may there be no sadness here.

May summers go and autumns come
and cramped cocoons of winter disappear--
bright butterflies upwinging in the sun.
May there be no sadness here.
